Book Review: Nine Perfect Strangers
Happy Friday!
I am very excited about something Tj and I have planned for this weekend. I am also looking forward to sleeping in! Tj and I went away last weekend and we had a red-eye flight before going to work on Thursday. Surprisingly I wasn't as tired as I thought I would be but it's always nice to be able to wake up naturally on weekends without an alarm clock.
Today's post is about a book I read last week that just came out in Canada.
The book:
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
What it's about:
Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty's latest page-turner, nine perfect strangers are about to find out...
Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can't even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.
Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She's immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don't look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person that intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/director of Tranquillum House. Could this person really have the answers Frances didn't even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer - or should she run while she still can?
It's not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question.
Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her writing a go-to for anyone looking for wickedly smart, page-turning fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft (from chapters.ca).
Why I wanted to read it:
When I read my first Liane Moriarty book I immediately went out and read all her others. I was hooked. I keep a list of my favourite authors (some of which are here) and every few months I check to see if they have a new book coming out. I really enjoy her books, and I like them even more now that I live in Australia. Some of the characters in this book were from Melbourne, which was fun haha.
Final Thoughts:
I gave this book 5/5, which is rare for me. I loved the characters! There were a lot of them, which wasn't hard to follow, but just meant I didn't get to know them all as well. Some of Moriarty's other books are a bit darker, so I wasn't sure what this book would be like - it sounded fluffier but there was one twist that I especially enjoyed. I think what topped this book from a 4 to a 5 for me was the ending. There were updates on what happened one week later, one year later, etc. and I love finding out what happened next for the characters.
Why should you read it:
I'd recommend it to fans of Maeve Binchy and Jojo Moyes. My copy is 491 pages, but it was a pretty quick read because once I started I couldn't put it down. It would be a good Christmas gift for the woman in your life (although I think men would enjoy it too).
