Rottnest Island

Happy Wednesday!

I hope you are having a good week so far :)

A few weekends ago Tj and I went to the state of Western Australia with our friend K and L who were visiting from Singapore. We had plans to take a long drive and hang out on the beach in Esperance for a few days but the weather did not agree with us. So the before the trip we were changing everything and lucky for us we got to go to Rottnest Island.

Getting there:

We took a ferry with Rottnest Express. Return trip and admission fee cost $70 per person. The ferry was about 30 min and it was rough! I've never been on a big boat that bounced around so much! I found the first 10 minutes in either direction were the worst and then it steadied out a bit more. Luckily, none of our crew get seasick but if you do, prepare yourself for a very bumpy ride.

Getting around:

There are only a few cars on the island and the best way to get around is by bike. We rented ours from Rottnest Pedal and Flipper for $30 each (you can also rent them from the ferry company above). It is mandatory to wear helmets (Tj didn't want to at first and then the island police made him put it on haha). There is a deposit of $50 per bike and extras like bike baskets or locks cost $5 each. Note to self: get a bike seat! I thought maybe I was sore because I haven't biked in a long time but then I remembered that even when I was a kid and I biked all summer long I still needed a special gel bike seat haha so I guess I've always been a princess :)

Biking around the island was such a fun way to get around! We got to explore way more of the island than if we had walked everywhere, so it's definitely worth it especially if you are only there for a day.

Where we ate:

We had drinks and lunch at Hotel Rottnest. Food was good, drinks were good. We even went back later for tea and coffee before taking the ferry home. There was a dj playing music and it was packed. There were a lot of families, and also some bachelor parties so a bit of a mixed crowds.

Good to know: There are water fountains all over the island so you can re-fill if you have a water bottle!

Highlights of the day:

Swimming

No matter where we are, or how cold the water is, Tj is always jumping in! The water was stunning… and freezing. The others kept telling me to just dunk myself and it would be warmer but it was still so cold!

Quokka Selfies

Quokka selfies! Quokkas can be found all over the island and are super gentle (although we did see a few chase others away if they came too close to where they were eating). They kind of look like a big squirrel or fluffy fat rat, but they are actually marsupials, like kangaroos, and they have pouches to keep their babies. I think the Quokka selfie trend was started by Roger Federer last year. We got a few pictures but then later we were taking a few more and I swear, the quokka turned and looked exactly in the camera and smiled. Tj and I died laughing! It was awesome.

I'm really glad we got to experience this part of Perth and I'd highly recommend you visit!
