Carry-On Essentials

Happy Wednesday!

Today's post isn't about what to pack in your carry-on, it's about travelling with only a carry-on and my top must-haves to survive any trip with limited baggage.

By now I think I am pretty good at travelling on just a carry-on. I first got good at travelling light when I was a flight attendant. I would be travelling on standby, so I was wasn't allowed to check any bags.

This continued in Europe. Tj and I would get super cheap flights with discount airlines that would only allow 1 carry-on luggage. Including your purse. And yes, I have actually been asked to stick my purse in my carry on to prove that it fits, only to take it out a few minutes later. Which was extra annoying considering that on most flights the overhead bins would fill up pretty fast, and if we weren't lining up to board early (which we never do), our bags would get checked underneath the plane anyways.

I've learned that I tend to overpack. And even when I pack so little, I always tend to pack the wrong things and not wear half of what I brought. So I've developed some travel rules to keep me in check:

  1. Bring extra shoes - We usually do a lot of walking and the key to not getting sore feet is to switch it up. Even the comfiest shoes start to hurt after a while.

  2. Always bring a hoodie - I don't care if you are going somewhere super hot in the middle of summer. It's better to have one than not. The few times I have broken this rule I have regretted it. Air conditioning was freezing, or it was cold and rainy (hello Greece).

  3. Eye Mask - This is good for the plane, the airport, and falling asleep in a strange hotel.

  4. Samples - I save all the samples I get from Sephora or wherever to use when I travel. It's a great way to test new products (especially hair products) and save space in your luggage.

  5. Socks - You might need them if the plane is freezing, or just to be more comfortable walking around the hotel room, but again, even if it's summer, socks are a must-have.

  6. Hand sanitizer - For when you can't wash your hands. Good to have around when travelling. The last thing you want is to get sick when you are on holiday.

  7. Start packing early and edit. Take stuff out every day. Don't add more lol.

Those are pretty basic things to start with but they are my ultimate tried and tested carry-on essentials.

When it comes to what to pack for clothes, only bring stuff that you will actually wear, not stuff you think you might wear (you won't wear it). Try and pack clothes that don't wrinkle easily or won't show stains. Bring versatile Items you can dress up or down. And don’t forget underwear and pyjamas

I was going to add don't forget your toothbrush, but when Jacob and Tj and I were in Sydney I actually forgot mine! Lol.

And that's the travel lesson at the end of the day. Don't stress too much about packing because you will be fine with what you have and you can usually pick up anything you forget (except when you are in Greece and all you want is a sweatshirt).

Hope you're having a great week :)
