Travel Throwback Thursday: Hawaii!

Happy Thursday!

I've been messaging my cousin who lives in Hawaii this week. And since it's going to be cold tonight in Melbourne (going down to 4 degrees!), I thought I'd go back to sunny Hawaii for today's travel throwback Thursday post.

Tj and I went to the Hawaiin Island of Oahu in May 2011. We stayed in Honolulu. I was a flight attendant at this time and we got a great deal. Because we were using my airline discount, we were flying standby. I remember we were sitting in the Vancouver airport waiting for our flight, not sure if we would get on, and trying to look at the departure board and see where else in the world we could go if we didn't make the flight. It was pretty exciting. Until we were in Hawaii and we couldn't get back home. We had to extend our trip by a few days and buy seats on a different airline.

It's been a while, so I don't remember a lot of specifics about this trip, but here are some things that stand out:

  • It was after this trip that I swore I would always have a hoodie in my carry-on so matter where I'm going or how nice I'm trying to dress. I broke this rule in Greece and froze!
  • Coconut syrup is one of my favourite things in the world. It goes on pancakes like maple syrup but it's sooo good
  • Tj's favourite part of the trip was renting jeeps and driving around
  • We saw a guy on a bicycle with no shoes, no shirt, holding a surfboard in one hand and a cigarette in the other (no hands on the handles) and it was the most Hawaiin thing ever
  • We would see people stopped at the side of the road and pull over to see what they were looking at. One time it was surfers, another time it was turtles! So cool!
  • Tj went surfing at Waikiki Beach. His instructor was an old guy with a huge belly and he made fun of Tj for not being a good paddler.
  • We spent the afternoon at Turtle Bay Resort where the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed
  • We tried to go to a Luau but it got rained out so I think we went shopping instead
  • We had to switch hotels for the last few days when we decided (had to) extend our trip.
  • On this trip, I also learned to ask locals where to go. We got tipped off to go to Lanikai and Kailua beaches and they were breathtaking!

I just asked Tj his favourite Hawaii memories and he said driving around, Lanikai and Kailua, and coconut syrup, so it seems like we are on the same page haha.

I'd love to go back to Hawaii one day and visit my cousin and her family and maybe see some of the other islands. And Hawaii is kind of halfway between Canada and Australia so maybe it'll be a good place to meet!

Ahhhh I can't wait to start travelling and plan a vacation! Tj has another trip coming up without me and I'm going to be so jealous!

Hope you have a great day :)
