Six Months of Blogging

Happy Friday!

I hope you are having a good week so far!

Last week was my 100th blog post and today is my six month blogging anniversary! Can you believe it?!

It has definitely been a journey so far. It is not easy! But it's been a lot of fun so far. My favourite thing is just having a record of my memories with pictures. When I go through some of my old posts I'll smile as I read some little tidbit I forgot about.

I started this blog shortly after we moved to Melbourne. I was still adjusting to the move, and stressing over finding a job. There are only so many hours a day I could spend looking for a job and applying for jobs or working on my resume. But then I would feel guilty for watching tv all afternoon. So I'd go for a long walk. But then what? There are a lot of hours to fill in the day when you don't have anything to do. And looking for work is tough! I hate the whole process but you gotta do it.

So I started thinking one afternoon, what I would do if I had a blog? It was something I had talked about doing when I moved to London but I never did. And I got excited. I jumped off the couch and went to the computer. I made a spreadsheet with some post ideas and started writing them out. I had a project! It was fun! And it gave me some structure to my days and discipline to sit there and write something and I felt like I was back on track. I have a whole bunch of Christmas themed posts that I never used because by the time I got this thing running it was mid-January.

I had to figure out this website stuff. Which I still haven't really done. So sorry to anyone who's subscribed because I haven't figured out that part yet. And then I made an email address and started a meganawayblog Instagram account. Except even though this blog is full of my personal pictures and I'm pretty open with what I write about, it felt too personal to share pictures of myself publicly on Instagram. So I would use some of my favourite scenery pictures. Except I'm not a photographer so it felt phony. I'm constantly questioning if I should be learning how to promote this so it appears in keyword searches or if I should put a password so only friends and family can follow along on our adventure and what is the right mix of sharing and being private.

I keep coming back to why am I doing this? I think it's a nice way to keep everyone back home updated on what we've been up to, and it's just a lot of fun for me sometimes. But ultimately I feel like I'm trying to document our time here and at the end, I want to make a book with all my blog posts and have it as something nice to look back on. I think it'll be a really nice souvenir for me and Tj, and that's more than enough reason for me to keep going.

I have a spreadsheet with all the posts I've done, and upcoming posts I've planned out. And I'll usually write one on the weekend and maybe start drafting some others, and throughout the week I'll update them the night before and schedule the post to go live at 9:00am the next day.

Somedays I sit down at my computer and have no idea what I'm going to write about. And then I'll get inspired by something and it'll just flow. Other times it's a struggle and even I'm surprised if I've managed to pull something together. And there are probably spelling mistakes or grammer mistakes because I don't have anyone to proof read and it seems like even when I triple check I always miss something.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm still figuring this all out. It's been fun so far and it's definitely gotten me out and about more. I'll say yeah I'm in, this is going to be a great blog post haha. Or like when Tj was away and it was pouring rain, but I went to the art exhibit I had been wanting to see and I had a great afternoon on my own.

My favourite bloggers post very regularly and that's what I like about them. I know that every morning while I have a cup of tea before work I can check out their latest post. But that's also their full-time job. And I already have one of those.

So while I love blogging and I'm definitely going to keep doing it, I think I'm going to cut back to three posts a week - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:00 am Melbourne time. This was a hard decision for me because I kind of like the challenge of writing something new every day. But I think I'll have better posts if I cut down on the frequency a bit. And I'll have a bit more free time, or should I say reading time haha. I'm going to see how that goes for a while and hopefully, you'll still follow along :)

Have a great weekend!
