Re-Reading Books
Happy Friday!
I hope you are having a good week so far. I’ve been feeling kind of out of it this week so I am looking forward to relaxing and reading on the weekend. I am also hoping to finally finish Game of Thrones! Tj doesn’t watch it, so I waited until the season was over and now I can binge watch the whole season.
This week I accidentally re-read a book I already read! I couldn’t believe it. This is exactly why I keep a list of all the books I’ve read. I also keep track on Pinterest. And shortly after I started this book I thought hmmm, that sounds familiar. I searched Pinterest but it didn’t come up so I kept reading. I got to a certain point and I knew I had read this book before. I remembered very clearly that someone died (although I mixed up which character it was), and I remembered something about letters. I couldn’t remember what happened to other characters though, and it wasn’t a very long book so I decided to just go ahead and finish it.
This goes back to my problem of putting down a book. Whenever I start something, I tend to just want to finish it. I’ve gotten a lot better at this over the last year since I first wrote that post, but it is definitely something I am still working on. I was so annoyed that I was re-reading this book, but even more annoyed because I actually paid for it. Kobo was having a sale on ebooks so I picked it up. What a waste!
To take a step back though, I love re-reading books. There are some books that just touch your soul when you read them. It’s the reason I love reading so much. Sometimes a story can completely transport you to another time or place. Sometimes when I’m reading a good book I am so engrossed with it that I am completely unaware of everything going on around me. Some books evoke an emotional response in me and I start laughing or crying. Some stories are just so good. I actually had to put the last Harry Potter book down for a while because I was getting sad and didn’t want the series to be over.
I am a firm believer in re-reading books. I’ve come to realize that I would rather re-read one of my favourites than finish a dud any day. That has made it easier for me to put down books I am not enjoying.
5 Reasons I Re-Read Books:
1. I loved the story.
I can read a book and enjoy it, and I can read a book and love it. And when I love it of course I want to read it again. ex. Tara Road by Maeve Binchy
2. I forgot what happened.
This happens to me a lot because I read a lot (which is also why I started a list of books I’ve read). I will remember I loved it but not what happened. ex. Night Over Water by Ken Follett
3. It’s comforting.
Old books are old friends. I will always make time for an old Sweet Valley Twins book or for Anne of Green Gables.
4. I read it too fast.
In the past, I have sped through a book I was enjoying way too fast and I missed some key plot points. Oops. I just wanted to know what happens! Only once have I ever finished a book and immediately started it again. That book was I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios.
5. I’m a sucker for a good series.
I’ve written about some of my favourite book series here. Every few years I will re-read my favourite series from beginning to end. Right now I am making my way through Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar series on audiobook!
It’s such a balance for me between all the book I want to read and all the books I want to re-read again! I think I might dedicate a whole month to only re-reading my favourite books. We’ll see…
Have a great weekend.
