Queen Victoria Market

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great weekend. I had a really nice weekend… my only complaint is that it went by too fast.

On Saturday Tj and I went to the gym and our local market, and then we finally made it to the Queen Victoria Market. We’ve been trying to go for the last few weekends but it hasn’t worked out. We were a little tired and it could’ve gone a different way but we decided to skip the afternoon nap and head to the market. Lucky we left when we did because it closed an hour earlier than we thought.

The Queen Victoria Market is the largest market in Melbourne, but Tj and I haven’t spent that much time there. It’s right in the city and very convenient to get to.

Here are some things I learned about the market from the website:

  • the market has been around for 140 years

  • it officially opened on 20 March 1878

  • the land was the originally the site of Melbourne’s first official cemetery

  • it spreads over two city blocks

  • it stays open late in the winter and during summer for the popular night market

  • you can shop at over 600 small businesses including fresh produce, meat and fish, flowers, coffee, gifts, jewelry, and so much more!

  • in May 2019 they banned all single-use plastic bags and straws

  • there are five worm farms on sire which can receive 2kgs of fresh food waste each day. The waste is converted into fertilizer by the worms which is then used around the Market in potted trees and plants

Tj and I were mainly looking for some art prints. We found a few we loved pretty quickly and then wandered around but everyone was starting to pack up. I definitely want to go back soon and explore a bit! Maybe we will have to check out the night market next.

Have a great week :)
