Lucky Bay - Esperance Trip (part 2)

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you had a great weekend.

Tj and I went to Ikea on Sunday to get a new desk to facilitate working from home. We will be working from a lot more so we are just getting ready for it while we still can. It seems like things might get shut down here soon. All the states are closing their borders and now gyms and restaurants and pubs are all closed. Ahhh. We were just getting into such a good gym routine too. We went to the sports store today and they were completely sold out of weights and yoga mats. Ahhh.

At a work meeting this morning, they discussed that rather than say we are social distancing or socially isolating, we should call it physical distancing because it’s still important to be social and check in on people, just not necessarily in person. Monday morning was a great example of that - my family had a worldwide video chat. None of us could hear anything, but it was great to see everyone haha. And then I chatted with my mom and Jacob for a bit and it was the perfect way to start my working from home adventures.

It doesn’t mean I’m not still dreaming about the beach though…

Today’s photos are from Lucky Bay, in Cape Le Grand National Park in Western Australia. This park is just under an hour’s drive from Esperance, where we were staying. The cost to get in the park was $15.00 AUD. If you plan it right, you can camp there, which is something Tj and I would definitely want to do next time.

From the signs posted at the beach, I learned:

  • Captain Matthew Flinders visited this area in 1802 when he was circumnavigating Terra Australis

  • Seeking shelter one night, the ship entered this bay. The Captain named it Lucky Bay because of the critical circumstances under which this place was discovered.

  • The ship spent four days anchored here, during which time natural historians and botanists collected 100 plant specimens that were new to science!

  • This white beach sand is recognized by a national scientific committee as the whitest in Australia.

  • The whiteness of the sand is due to the size and composition of the sand grains. The sand is very fine quartz sand. The sand grains have rough surfaces, an effect that is known as ‘frosting’, that makes the sand look white. The sand is very hard, and when you walk over it, it squeaks.

We arrived pretty early in the morning and it wasn’t that busy yet. There is a coffee van on the beach so we grabbed a hot beverage and went for a long walk. It was very windy but sooo pretty. We couldn’t stop taking pictures. Even with the cloudy sky, the shades of blue and turquoise were breathtaking. It didn’t even feel like real life.

Lucky Bay is known for kangaroos that hop around on the beach, but when I looked it up, the info I found said they are most active at dawn and dusk. I was so worried I wouldn’t get to see one. But dreams do come true, and as we were walking back, a kangaroo hopped out of the dunes to harass a family with food haha. It reminded me of a dog begging for people food. Tj got some great pictures for me. I was too busy crying LOL. It was amazing!!

When the sun came out it was very nice. I set up the towels and read for a bit while Tj went for a run on the beach. There were lots of people walking around, and I always love watching windsurfers! They were going out so far though… I would be so scared of sharks. I only wish the water had been slightly warmer - it was ice cold.

It was still pretty windy, so after a while, we decided to check out some other beaches in the park. Later, we stopped by again to see if there were any kangaroos on the beach. There weren’t, but we did run into a few cuties right in front of our car in the parking lot.

Every day on this trip brought something new and exciting. Kangaroos on possibly the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen - doesn’t get much better!

Have a great week :)
