We Tried a Meal Kit

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great weekend.

Melbourne was sunny and warm which was so nice after a few cold and rainy days. The weather is all over the place this time of year.

Tj and I had a lot to do, but number one on our list was to go out to eat! We are trying to take advantage of this time before the baby arrives and it's still easy to just pop out and grab a bite to eat. We went to dinner on Friday night and it was so good. On Saturday, we went back to an old favourite brunch spot and it totally lived up to our expectations. Then we went for a big walk and stopped at the market and did some errands and took advantage of such a nice day.

We haven't had to do much groceries in the last few weeks because we have been trying out a meal kit service! We are very late to the party, but we finally tried Hello Fresh. I have some friends who tried it but I didn't really know what to expect.

On Monday mornings, we would get a delivery of all the groceries we needed for 3 meals for 2 people for the week. The first week, Tj and I selected the meals we wanted to try. We chose 2 meat ones and one vegetarian one for me. The other weeks we kept forgetting to choose, so we just got whatever they sent us. These did not include a vegetarian meal specifically, but I was able to still try some of the salads and vegetable side dishes.

Here are our thoughts after a few weeks:

Likes:

  • Loved the convenience - so nice to take a bag out of the fridge with everything we need to prepare out mean, and in all the right portions

  • Didn't have to think about what to eat that night

  • Lots of variety of recipes to choose from, and even though we kept forgetting to choose, Tj really enjoyed some of the meals he probably never would've picked

  • Got us out of a cooking rut

 Dislikes:

  • I feel like we used soooo many dishes to prep these meals and we ended up running the dishwasher a lot more frequently

  • Tj prefers his own rice to the rice that comes with the meal, and he sometimes didn't like the side veggies, so really the best part for him was seasoning and cooking meat in new ways

  • Some portions seemed small and were definitely not enough for Tj to have 2 meals

  • Some nights we didn't want that meal but felt obligated to cook it. We'd probably prefer 2 meal kits a week as opposed to 3

Final thoughts:

  • Enjoyed the convenience and it’s definitely a service I can see us wanting to use every once in a while

  • Might come in pretty handy once the baby arrives and Tj goes back to working in the office more often

  • We still need to evaluate if the cost is worth it ongoing, or if we can try to incorporate more spices and flavours and sauces into our regular cooking routine based on the recipes that were provided

Now… what am I going to make for dinner tonight? haha

Have a great week :)
