Travel Throw Back Thursday: Croatia!

Travel Throw Back Thursday: Croatia!

Happy Thursday!

Tj made it safely back to Australia. He's tired but happy to be back home. Because one thing he realised on his trip is that Melbourne is home now. And even though he loved being back in Toronto and London, he was happy to be coming back to Melbourne and the nice weather. Also, his allergies were driving him crazy in London and it is not allergy season here haha. It's still in the 20s most days, but winter is coming and we have no idea what to expect for an Australian winter.

Today I thought I'd talk a little about our trip to Croatia in May 2017.

Croatia was the middle leg of our twelve day Goodbye to Europe trip. We spent four days in Italy, then four days in Croatia, and ended with four days in Greece, which you can read more about here.

Croatia is one of the coolest places I've ever been. It was so different than anything I've ever seen. It might look familiar because Game of Thrones films in Croatia.

We flew into Split from Rome and had a few hours there before we had to catch a ferry. It was like stepping back in time. We just wandered around, getting lost in the little streets. We had a nice lunch and a drink. Tj was pretty impressed. He hadn't heard much about Split but it definitely would have been worth it to spend more time there.

Next we went to Bol. Bol is a town on the Croatian island of Brač, off the coast of Split. It is home of the famous Zlatni Rat beach. It was just stunning. The pictures do not do it justice. The water was breathtaking. It was so clear and so blue. It was exactly what I had imagined when I always thought of Croatia. It was still early in the season so it wasn't busy yet. The hotel we stayed at was up the hill a bit and it was lovely. The staff were very helpful and they recommended a restaurant next door to try. It was a local place. When we walked by during the day there were construction workers picking up food, so you know it must be good. We went back that night and ate outside in a lovely garden. The food was incredible! Tj was in heaven. I think that was his favourite meal of the whole trip! Our last day there was quite rainy so we just stopped at a little café and a cup of tea before catching our next ferry.

Our trip was pretty ambitious. New country every four days and a new city every second day. There were a lot of travel days which could be tiring, but on the ferry to Hvar we actually picked out a few processional songs for the wedding! Winning.

Hvar was the only place in Croatia Tj had been before. It is known as more of a party place, but again, it was early in the season. We stayed in the cutest Airbnb. There were lots of fancy yachts to look at. On one of them a group of guys were watching a hockey playoff game with the Ottawa Senators (they lost). We went to a nearby island that has a lot of beach clubs. It was nice to just hang out and relax by the water, but it was still a little chilly to swim. We did hike up a little 'mountain' to watch the sunset though!  I can see how Hvar can get really busy and fun!

Finally, on our last day we were flying out of Dubrovnik. We took another ferry. We only had a few hours before we had to catch our flight, but we did make it to Old Town for a bit. I was really excited to walk down the famous stairs from Game of Thrones (Shame! Shame!). Croatia won a special spot in our hearts and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going!
