What I'm Reading Now
I'm switching things up this week because I have a special post planned for Friday. So today is my book blog post instead. April was a slow readying month so I'm excited to get back to books in May :)
What I Just Read
I just finished the book Without Mercy by Lisa Jackson.
What's it about?
Ever since her father was killed in a home invasion, Julia “Jules” Farentino has been plagued by nightmares. Her half-sister, Shaylee, now seventeen, has had her own difficulties, earning a lengthy rap sheet. Still, when Jules learns of her mother’s decision to send Shay to Blue Rock Academy, an elite boarding school in Oregon, Jules is skeptical. A student went missing a few months earlier and there are rumors she may have died during one of the school’s questionable treatments. On impulse, Jules applies for a teaching job at the Academy. Shortly before she arrives, a student is found hanged, another near death. Hysterical, Shay believes it’s murder. Staff members are wary and unwelcoming—all except Cooper Trent, who has his own suspicions, his own secrets, and was once Jules’s lover. Then another girl is found dead. Something sinister is at hand—but Jules may be too late to stop it. Behind the Academy’s idyllic veneer lurks an evil force on a brutal and terrifying mission. And Jules has become the next target of a bloodthirsty killer without limits, without remorse, without mercy . . . (from Chapters.ca)
My thoughts:
It was way too long. And more than a little far-fetched. There were a few times I contemplated putting it down. But by then I was 3/4 of the way in so I decided to finish. Great twist at the very end so it redeemed itself, but I only rated it 2.5/5 (In my system books I don't finish get a 1 and books I don't like get a 2). I've read other books of hers that I loved way way more.
What I'm Reading Now
I am almost halfway through Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan.
What's it about?
Sophie’s husband James is a loving father, a handsome man, a charismatic and successful public figure. And yet he stands accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is convinced he is innocent and desperate to protect her precious family from the lies that threaten to rip them apart.
Kate is the lawyer hired to prosecute the case: an experienced professional who knows that the law is all about winning the argument. And yet Kate seeks the truth at all times. She is certain James is guilty and is determined he will pay for his crimes.
Who is right about James? Sophie or Kate? And is either of them informed by anything more than instinct and personal experience? Despite her privileged upbringing, Sophie is well aware that her beautiful life is not inviolable. She has known it since she and James were first lovers, at Oxford, and she witnessed how easily pleasure could tip into tragedy.
Most people would prefer not to try to understand what passes between a man and a woman when they are alone: alone in bed, alone in an embrace, alone in an elevator… Or alone in the moonlit courtyard of an Oxford college, where a girl once stood before a boy, heart pounding with excitement, then fear. Sophie never understood why her tutorial partner Holly left Oxford so abruptly. What would she think, if she knew the truth? (from Chapters.ca)
My thoughts:
So far so good. I can tell I'm enjoying it because I'm reading a lot quicker than the last book. I want to see how it all comes together.
What I'm Going to Read Next
The next book I'm going to read (I already have it from the library) is Need to Know by Sarah Cleveland.
What's it about?
Vivian and Matt are a seemingly normal suburban couple, experiencing the same struggles as many North American families: juggling work and children, budgeting for a house in a decent school district. They're in love and life is good. Though Vivian can't share much about her CIA assignment with him, Matt has always been supportive, and his job as a software engineer allows him the flexibility needed to raise their four kids. But when she makes a startling discovery researching the CIA's Russian account, everything about her life and her marriage is cast in a new light--forcing her to make impossible and dangerous choices before she loses her job, her family and her life. Happy Reading :)
