Jacob's Top Travel Tips
Here it is, tips and tricks for travelling across the globe from Meg’s infamous brother, Mr. Jacob ;)
Firstly, I’d like to point out how grateful I am to have such an amazing sister. I am quite fortunate to have seen so much of the world already with only 20 years of life under my belt. This trip to Australia was financed by the BoM (Bank of Megan) and of course by her partner institution BCT (Big City TJ). I seriously doubt I’ll ever be able to repay you guys <3.
Now for the tips!
WHAT TO BRING ON THE PLANE
This being perhaps the longest flight of your life, you’re 100% bringing some toiletries because, well… hygiene. I’m talking facewash, tooth brush, toothpaste, deodorant and if you’re one to wear contacts (like me) don’t… wear your glasses! Also, it got surprisingly cold during the flight so you’ll need a sweater/long sleeved shirt. I even brought sweatpants in my carry-on so I could change into them once the plane took off (comfort is everything!). I would also recommend bringing a couple snacks but nothing too filling as you will be fed properly during the flight. Oh!
THE AIRLINE
I flew with Qantas airlines from LA to Australia and if I’m being brutally honest... It was phenomenal! The amenities were great, the flight attendants seemed genuine with their service and believe it or not, the food actually wasn’t crap! Definitely would recommend Qantas if you’re travelling to Australia (although I think their tickets are pricier).
KILLING TIME
Given how incredibly long this flight is, the best way to kill time isn’t to binge watch movies or shows on the plane because 14 hours of just that may drive you crazy. SO SLEEP! Personally, I’m not one to sleep on planes but due to the circumstances, it wasn’t all that difficult. You’ll know when it’s time to get some shuteye because all the lights on the plane will be shut off for an extended period of time. I ended up getting a full 8 hours once I finally passed out. After which I then began to binge watch movies and tv shows and basically treated the remainder of the flight like any other.
ADJUSTING TO THE TIME DIFFERENCE
Probably the most difficult hurdle to overcome while travelling to Australia (from Ottawa) was the 14-hour time difference. However, the one strategy I had to defeat this was to fall asleep on the plane around the same time as I would be asleep according to Australian time. This was very helpful for synching my sleep schedule with the Aussies and of course, my wonderful sister.
AIRPORT MANEUVERING
Good luck at LAX… lol
