Happy Friday!

I hope you are having a great week so far.

Last week I wrote about my favourite books of 2019, and now it’s time for my review of the first book I read in 2020! In 2019 I shared my first book of the year. This year I knew right away which book I wanted to read first. It’s one I’ve had on my shelf since last March when I purchased it in Canada.

The book:

The Huntress by Kate Quinn

What it's about: (from indigo.ca):

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted…

Bold and fearless, Nina Markova always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on the invading Germans. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only Nina’s bravery and cunning will keep her alive.

Transformed by the horrors he witnessed from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Growing up in post-war Boston, seventeen-year-old Jordan McBride is determined to become a photographer. When her long-widowed father unexpectedly comes homes with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the soft-spoken German widow. Certain that danger is lurking, Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past—only to discover that there are mysteries buried deep in her family . . . secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

Why I wanted to read it:

I loved The Alice Network by Kate Quinn so I knew I wanted to read her new book. I bought this one when I was in Canada and I was so excited to read it. But I feel like I had just read a war-related novel so I didn’t want to read The Huntress right away. And then it’s just been sitting on my shelf, waiting for me to pick it up. I was saving it for when I went on a holiday because it’s nice to read a paperback at the beach (no glare). Anyways, almost a year later I still hadn’t read it and I decided it was the perfect pick for my first book of 2020.

Why you should read it:

I gave this book a 5/5! What a way to start my reading year. This book totally surpassed my expectations. For a book about a lethal Nazi murderess, it wasn’t that dark. It focused more on the people tracking her down than the horrible things she had done. I really enjoyed the characters, especially the Russian pilot Nina. I loved the intricacies of how everything came together. I had a major book hangover when I was finished and I already know The Huntress will be on my favourite books of 2020 list.

Happy Reading :)
