I hope you had a great weekend.
Today is Tj's birthday! Tj and I had a really nice weekend celebrating his birthday. We went shopping, ate at a restaurant we loved, tried a new café, and even won at the casino.
The weekend had a really weird vibe. On Friday it was so smoky in Melbourne. You could taste the smoke in the air when you walked outside. Australia is on fire!
The mood on Saturday was very somber. Every time we looked at our phones or watched the news we would see so many horrifying images. It's heartbreaking to see this country we love so much suffering. So many of the places we want to visit are currently on fire.
Tj and I went to the CBD (downtown) and I don't know it's because of summer/Christmas holidays, but we've never seen the city so empty. We stopped for a nice drink on the Yarra River, and Tj wasn't sure if he wanted to go to the casino after as planned. It kind of didn't feel right. So we made a deal, and I took half of his birthday casino money and donated it to WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue! We took this picture on Christmas Day, and after holding a Koala ourselves, we were especially sad that so many of them are dying in these fires. Maybe our contribution will help a little Koala somewhere.
Even with less money to play with, we still walked away winners at the casino woohoo. We weren't having the best of luck (we needed my cousin Koby who was the only winner last time we went!). We were about to leave and cash out what we had left when we spontaneously played one last hand. We lost, but the number that came up was six (Tj's birthday!) and we had been waiting for a six to come up all night. We were about to leave again when we went back one more time and put money on six… we won! We couldn't believe it. It was a very exciting win haha and a great end to the night.

In honor of his birthday this year, here are 5 things you might not know about Tj:
If he was born 200 years ago he would 100% be an explorer. He loves space and other universes because he is so curious about what else is out there. He's not so much interested in the moon and Mars, but he had the opportunity to leave everything on Earth behind to explore new planets, I'm pretty sure he'd do it.
He always mixes up green beans and peas. It's funny because he always thinks he has it right, but then I have to ask if he means the long ones or the round ones haha.
One of the top places on his travel bucket list is the Seychelles Islands.
Tj is a very fast runner. Whenever there is a running benchmark challenge at our gym, Tj is almost always one of the top five males. I think that's one of the things that made him such a good soccer player back in the day :)
Before we got married, Tj would say the best day of his life was the day Canada won gold in men's hockey at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Seriously, he has the DVD series back in Canada and he used to watch it all the time.
Now, we have to go enjoy a rainy Sunday evening because tomorrow we want to wake up early to watch some hockey. And hopefully, the rain will continue and pour down on some of these fires.
