What I'm Reading Now
Happy Friday!
I hope you are having a great week so far.
My week has flown by. On Thursday I thought it was Wednesday, so it felt short at least haha.
Tj had actually had to go to the office a few days this week which was so strange. We are both pretty used to the whole work from home thing now. It’s so comfortable, especially in our new apartment where we each have our own offices (and Tj does’t have to work in a closet anymore haha).
What I’m reading now:
Right now I am 26% through the book The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse.
This thriller is one of Reese Witherspoon's book club picks. I have enjoyed her thriller picks so far, so I added this one to my list when it was announced as the book of the month.
What it's about:
Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel.
An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.
Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge--there's something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.
Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in. . .
What I think so far:
I’m not that far into it, but I’m liking it so far.
The setting is very important. The concept of a converted sanatorium is very intriguing (and spooky!).
Side note: One time I did a summer French language course in Winnipeg and we stayed in an old nurses’ residence next to a hospital and there were a few spooky incidents, so I can kind of relate.
But also I love reading about the architecture and design elements of this hotel.
The main character Elin is complicated and I don’t know what her deal is yet. I’m enjoying how she seems a little unstable, but also how her background as a detective is coming through when she doesn’t expect it.
I’m just at the part of the book where stuff is starting to happen and I just want to read read read.
So… time to go read haha. It’s good timing because the little bub in my belly is kicking like crazy right now and it makes it really hard to use my laptop.
Have a great weekend.
