Welcome to my adventures.

I like books, baking and travel. Follow along with me as I begin my new adventure in Melbourne!

Exploring Melbourne - CBD

Exploring Melbourne - CBD

This past weekend we went the the CBD to show Lisa around. The Melbourne City Centre is also referred to as the 'City' or the 'CBD' (Central Business District).  Melbourne is super easy to get around, and the CBD is just 2 train stops from where we are staying. It only takes us about 10 minutes to get there.

We ate dinner in Chinatown (we are on a hunt to find the city's best dumplings), and then we had some drinks at a few hidden bars. One was a Berlin themed bar, where you had climb to the third floor and ring a doorbell to be let in. You could choose to sit in East Berlin or West Berlin. They had a special drink of the week based on an American gangster, and there was a big card telling you about the gangster and describing the drink. Reading in the bar?! My kind of place :)

On Sunday we went back to show Lisa around during the day. We got into a brunch spot we've been dying to try and picked up some donuts for dessert later. We looked around the shops a bit because my shirt was scratching my sunburn but I didn't find anything. As soon as I got home it was all about the Aloe.

The first time we went to the CBD we weren't expecting much. We thought it was going to be like Toronto's financial district, kind of dead on the weekend. But it was so busy! I don't know if it's just because it's summer holidays and there are lots of tourists, but every time we've been to the CBD it has just been bustling. We were so impressed with the area, we even looked at a few apartments there. We would say we needed to get to know the neighbourhood better, but I think that was just an excuse to go out to eat.

There is a really good shopping centre, so many cafes, street performers, and lots of restaurants hidden in laneways. We have also been enjoying all the graffiti, which reminds us of Shoreditch where we used to live in London. We just wander around, get lost, stop somewhere for a coffee or tea, and wander around some more. The very first night we got here we went to the CBD and stumbled upon a Night Noodle Market, which was like a dream for Tj. You can probably tell what our favourite part of the city is, seeing as how I have lots of laneway pictures and not many of the actual city.

The last big picture is from the 'Super Blood Blue Moon' that we had last week. There was a total lunar eclipse on the second full moon of the month. That picture was taken at about 9:30pm and the moon was so bright it looked like a sun in the picture. I woke up at 11:00pm to see the partial eclipse and again at 12:30am to see the full eclipse. It was really neat, but my pictures didn't turn out. If anyone has any tips for night pictures with an iPhone please let me know!
