Canadian Book Recommendations

Happy Friday!

I say it every week but I always mean it, this week has flown by. It's weird because it's the middle of the winter here but this Sunday is Canada Day! It's weird to have Canada in the winter because usually the long weekend kind of starts the summer. Although, I shouldn't complain because I have a cousin in Newfoundland and she sent me a video of snow yesterday! In July! That's brutal (but also sounds so Canadian so maybe fitting for Canada Day weekend haha).

Last year we were in London and we spent Canada in Trafalgar Square with Jacob and lots of friends. It was a lot of fun even though Jacob was super jet-lagged and I spent like ten dollars and waited in line for fifteen minutes for the crappiest poutine I've ever had. I'm not sure what we will get up to this weekend. I think there is a pub that is having a Canada Day party so we might need to check that out. I do have an Ottawa Senators Jersey here I can wear lol.

In honour of Canada's birthday, I thought I'd share some of my favourite Canadian book recommendations:

  1. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery - maybe you've read it before, or maybe you think it's too childish, but this book is a Canadian classic for a reason. Pick it up and fall in love with Anne and Avonlea! You can read more about why this is one of my all-time faves here
  2. No Time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay - This was the first book by Linwood Barclay that I read and I was hooked. I've read a lot of his stuff, but I would recommend this one to start with. When Cynthia was fourteen she woke up and her entire family had disappeared without a trace. Twenty-five years later she learns the truth about what happened.
  3. Buffalo Jump by Howard Shrier - Someone at Chapters recommended this series to Tj and he bought me all the books for my birthday one year. This is the first book in a series of four, set mainly in Toronto and Buffalo NY.  A hitman has a job to kill a five-year-old boy but he can't do it so he turns to a private investigator for help to find out who ordered the hit.
  4. Do or Die by Barbara Fradkin - I love this one because it's set in Ottawa and I love that I recognize places. A wealthy, popular graduate student is murdered in the university library and Inspector Green investigates. It's the first in a ten book series, but if that's daunting, try her new series (only two books) starting with Fire in the Stars
  5. David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell - Malcolm Gladwell is a British born Canadian author. This is a non-fiction book but it was so interesting!  This book examines the struggle of underdogs versus favourites. I've enjoyed all of his books that I read so far and I think Tj would too.
  6. Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat - This is a book by a naturalist who was sent to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. He lived with wolves! I love wolves! Great Canadian book and I'm interested in reading it again because they keep killing wolves in BC to save the caribou but it's not helping which makes me so sad so maybe there are lessons in there that would still be relevant today.

I haven't read much by Canadian author Mariam Toews but by cousin Alice suggested her and we seem to have similar taste in books so she has just moved to the top of my 'To Read' list.

I hope this helps with long reading recommendations! Have a great weekend :)
