Whitehaven Beach
Happy Monday!
I hope you had a great weekend. Today I thought I'd share some of the photos from when Jacob was visiting. We did a day trip from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.
Our boat pulled up to Whitehaven beach and we had to be shuttled to land by a smaller boat. So we waited until the crowd died down and stayed on the boat to take pictures.
It was insane. This is the most beautiful place on earth I've ever seen! It was breathtaking. The water was every shade of blue and turquoise and the sand was soft and bright white. The day we were there, there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
Whitehaven Beach is about 7 kilometres long. It was voted the second best beach in the world. The sand is 98 percent silica, so it has a powder like consistency and doesn't retain the heat.
When we got dropped off on the beach, Tj and Jacob quickly fell behind the tour because they were so excited. They kept stopping to take more pictures. We did a short walk to get to the main beach and then we had about an hour there which was not even close to enough time.
The only crappy thing was we were carrying our wetsuits. We had been warned not to swim in the water without them because of 'stingers'. There are two types of jellyfish in the area - the Irukandji Jellyfish and Box Jellyfish. They are both very dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. That's not fun! But can you imagine being on the second most beautiful beach in the world on a gorgeous sunny day and not being able to jump into the perfect water? The higher risk season for the stingers is between October - May, so we went for it. The guides had said we would probably be ok, and we saw some locals swimming without wetsuits. So we jumped in and splashed around. It wasn't completely relaxing because Irukandji Jellyfish are transparent and impossible to see in the water, so even though we felt ok we couldn't feel completely comfortable swimming.
The tide was out so as we walked around on the beach one of the guides explained the marks in the sand from stingrays and the tiny piles of sand bubbles from the crabs. It was so cool.
After our time on the beach, we did a short hike up to the viewing platform for Hill Inlet. This is where we got our best photos.
It was such a memorable day but too short! Jacob and I both changed our lock screens on our phone to pictures from that day and I swear it's so distracting. Every time I look at it I can't stop thinking about how I got to see that in real life.
If you are planning a trip to Australia, Whitehaven Beach is a must-do.
Have a great week :)
