Welcome to my adventures.

I like books, baking and travel. Follow along with me as I begin my new adventure in Melbourne!

Tasmania 2021 (Part 1)

Tasmania 2021 (Part 1)

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great weekend.

On Friday we learned that Melbourne was heading into a five-day stage 4 lockdown. Ugh, not this again. Everything is closed, and we can only leave our house for four reasons, and not more than five kilometers from home. After lockdown in 2020, five days feels like nothing. I was a little down at first but Tj and I just moved into our new place last week so we are keeping busy setting everything up and getting organising. We are mostly finished now and we are loving it!

A few weeks ago, Tj and I took a last-minute trip to Tasmania. The Tuesday was a holiday for Australia Day, so we took off the Monday so we could have a long weekend. We left on Sunday and came back early Wednesday morning, so it was a quick one, but we had a lot of fun.

Tasmania is an Australian state (which to be honest, I didn't know until we moved here). It's an island just south of Melbourne, so it was a quick 1-hour flight. We flew into Hobart, the state capital.

What we did:

When Tj and I travel, we don't usually have a lot planned. We went to Bruny Island one day, which I will write about separately. Other than that, we spent some time walking around and exploring different neighbourhoods. My favourite was Battery Point. I loved all the little cottages, and there were so many good places to eat. We also spent a lot of time in North Hobart - we almost stayed in this area, and we realised we kept going back here to eat.

We also went to Richmond. There is a famous old bridge and a charming little village. We stopped at a bakery for lunch and ice cream and ate in a little courtyard where a man was playing the harp.

I also really enjoyed our drive to the top of Mount Wellington for some amazing views. It was freezing though!

We had a few fails. I wanted to check out the Museum of Old and New Art which is supposed to be really interesting but we ran out of time. We also drove to Port Arthur, which is a historic convict site. It sounded interesting, but we needed tickets to visit so again due to limited time we skipped it. There was also a short cave hike that we planned on doing near Port Arthur, but we got there only to realise it was closed! There were still some great views though.

Where we ate:

There were a lot of places we wanted to try that were all booked up and they didn't take walk-ins. If you ever travel to Hobart, make reservations ahead of time if there's anywhere you really want to go.

Here are a few of the places Tj and I tried that we would recommend:

Jackman & McRoss - The most delicious bakery! I wish we had more time so we could eat here again. I had the frittata and Tj had a pie, and we shared a blackberry tart! So good

Da Angelo Ristorante - We had the best fresh pasta here and ate way too much haha.

Born in Brunswick - We came here for brunch and were very impressed with the coffee and chai. Tj however was not impressed with the 20$ Banh Mi on the menu, although we saw a lot of people eating it so it must be popular.

Pancho Villa - Mmm this was Mexican food and it was so good. We both ate too much and had to go for a walk around the block. They had a sweet potato and carrot dish that was soooo good, even Tj ate it. I will definitely be trying to recreate that one.

It's been very busy lately with work and the move, but I've been missing writing for Megan Away! There's so much to share so hopefully I will get back on top of it over the next few weeks. Stay tuned next to read about our day trip to Bruny Island!

Have a great week :)
