Welcome to my adventures.

I like books, baking and travel. Follow along with me as I begin my new adventure in Melbourne!

Philip Island

Philip Island

Good Morning!

On our road trip this past weekend, we also went to Philip Island. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne to Philip Island on Australia's southern coast. We were coming from Lorne which is west of Melbourne, so the drive was longer. We rushed to get there in time for the Penguin Parade, when little penguins come ashore at sunset. We were so excited to see them, but unfortunately the event was sold out for the night. Bummer. We got a 25% off coupon for next time though, and the traffic attendant told us it would be better to wait for a different night anyways since we wouldn't get a great view if it was sold out.

That's ok… more time to play Dutch Blitz! We got our butts kicked by our friends again. We made a big BBQ dinner that night, I felt so Australian. There has been way too much eating on this trip.

The next morning we decided to go for a hike on the Cape Woolamai trail. We walked across the beach and the wind was so strong the sand stung my legs. We took our time walking to the Pinnacles lookout and took lots of pictures. Apparently during the  Australian winter you can see a lot of whales from there.

There was a sign warning that there are snakes, but we had heard that they weren't that common to see. I was so busy looking for one that I stubbed my toe on a rock and it was bleeding everywhere. It didn't hurt but it was kind of gross. I tried to wrap it with a tissue but it kept getting dirty so I committed the ultimate fashion faux-pas and wore socks with sandals for the rest of the hike.

And wouldn't you know it, a few minutes later on the trail we saw our first snake! It was black and creepy and I screamed lol. I don't know what kind it was, but I feel like everything in Australia could be poisonous so we didn't get too close. It was timid though and just slithered off into the grass.

Later we saw a second snake! It was not my lucky day. I was too busy being scared to get any pictures of them lol.

We also saw two kangaroos. I can't believe we live in a place where we just get to see kangaroos in the wild! They just looked at us and then hopped away. So cool.

We had the best day with our friends and it was a great last day with Lisa. She didn't get to do the cliff jumping on her Australia bucket list, but that just means she will need to come back again :)

Before driving back to Melbourne we stopped at Smith's Beach, just two minutes from the beach house where we were staying. We didn't have time to swim, but we watched a kite surfer for a bit. I didn't even know that was a sport, but this guy made it look so easy!

I can't wait to go back to Philip Island, and next time I will be sure to get my Penguin Parade tickets in advance :)
