Sunburned in Sorrento

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great weekend! We had a lot of fun because our first guest arrived last Friday - Tj's sister Lisa, all the way from Vancouver!

I met her at the airport on Friday morning and she only had a little nap and hasn't even been jetlagged. We had a nice dinner out on Friday and woke up early on Saturday to go for breakfast (the eating tour of Melbourne continues!).

We rented a car to drive to Sorrento Back Beach, in the Mornington Peninsula. It was about an hour and a half's drive from Melbourne. Tomorrow you'll read more about Tj's skills at driving on the wrong side of the road the last time we rented a car. All I can say that this time he was practically a pro - he only tried to drive on the right side once when leaving a parking lot haha. But seriously, he has really gotten the hang of it!

It was a gorgeous sunny day. The beach was beautiful and it was windy enough that you never felt really hot. We brought our little cooler and some snacks and hung out all day. I loaded on the sunscreen but Lisa insisted that she doesn't burn (can you tell where this is headed?).

The water wasn't even that cold - it was refreshing. Everyone was jumping in the waves so Tj and I thought we'd join them. I've played in the waves at Cavendish Beach in PEI my whole life, so I thought I knew what I was doing. I didn't even think I'd get my hair wet.

I was so wrong.

I was probably only in the water up to my knees. These weren't like normal waves. There would be like 3-4 nice, fun-sized waves that everyone jump into and laugh, and then a huge monster wave would come out of nowhere and just knock me right down. Like I had my sunglasses on , and I didn't even notice that they were missing until I got out of the water 15 minutes later. They just got ripped right off of my face! It was fun, but it kind of wasn't fun because I ended up full of sand and falling all over.

We walked further down the beach and Tj and Lisa jumped off a big rock into the water.   It was a little calmer at that end. Then we hiked up (a whole 150m) to a lookout and took in the view. I think this is Tj's favorite beach we've been to so far.

Next we went to check out Diamond Bay Beach. It was less than a ten minute drive away. This beach was down a residential street. It was a lot smaller and secluded, and the water was much calmer. There weren't any waves at all (no lifeguards either). You could actually swim or stand in the water here. It was a completely different vibe. Definitely more relaxing. It was very nice, but not as stunning as the other beach.

On the drive home, Lisa started to complain her arms were tingling. Fast forward when we got home and she realised how red she was everywhere! Her first sunburn ever. Ouch. And even though I applied sunscreen, and re-applied it several times, every spot I had missed was burned! I have red polkadots. Tj was a little burned too, but not as bad as me and Lisa. The sun in Australia is no joke!

A note to all our future guests - we now have lots of Aloe!
